When it comes to Middle East connecting flights, Etihad Airways is a good choice, but I’ve also flown with Emirates twice and had no complaints, so I’ll summarise my review here.
What is Emirates?

Emirates is an airline based in Dubai, the central city of the UAE (United Arab Emirates).
The uniforms of the female cabin crew are very distinctive, with a beige suit and a red cap adorned with a white veil (or scarf?).
Recommended Seats on Emirates
When it comes to airplane seats, people often say things like, ‘a seat in front of the engines is better’ or ‘a seat in the front row where there’s more legroom is better.’ However, what I personally prioritise is how easily I can recline my seat without bothering others. That’s why I believe the best choice is a seat with the wall directly behind it.
As shown in the image below, seats located in front of the galley with the chef’s hat symbol are great options. These seats have enough space behind them for people to pass through, so you don’t have to worry about inconveniencing anyone when reclining your seat.

However, when looking for the galley, you’ll often find that in economy class, it’s usually the seats towards the back. If you have a tight connection time, this might not be the best option.
In such cases, if reclining is a priority for you, seats near the toilets are also worth considering.

The wall is right behind the seat, and at first glance, it looks like you won’t be able to recline the seat. But in fact, you can.
When I first used a seat in front of toilet, I was worried the flushing noise might be too loud. However, since the engine noise of the plane is so much louder, it didn’t bother me at all.
How to Select Seats on Emirates?
It seems that with Emirates, the ability to select your seat before check-in depends on the type of ticket purchased. In some cases, you might be able to choose your seat before check-in, while in others, it may only be available after check-in.

I’ve heard that, aside from the ticket type, airlines sometimes adjust the availability of seats they allow passengers to select. Emirates might be making similar adjustments as well.
What are Emirates’ In-Flight Meals Like?
It seems that Emirates Airlines’ in-flight meals have received high ratings from users.
Indeed, the in-flight meals were just as good as the reputation suggests.
Emirates’ In-Flight Meal
I didn’t take pictures of every meal, but this is what the economy class in-flight meal looked like.

Emirates’ In-Flight Meal Menu
When you go to the ticket information page online, you’ll be able to see the in-flight meal menu as the flight schedule gets closer.

On the plane, you’re only ever asked something like ‘Chicken or beef?’, so it’s a bit exciting to know the menu in advance.
Emirates’ In-Flight Entertainment
To be honest, after flying with Emirates twice, I’ve had the impression that the movies and TV shows aren’t great, both times.
I’m not a film buff, so this opinion might not be reliable, but even though there’s a large selection, there aren’t many featured movies, and most of the movies were ones I hadn’t heard of.
Headphones Break Easily?
On my second trip with Emirates, I flew from Japan to the UK via Dubai, and on the return journey, I followed the same route, with a total of four flight legs.
During those four flights, the sound in one ear of the provided headphones cut out twice.
It wasn’t a big problem, as the flight attendants could replace them if I asked, but I did feel it took some effort to stop a busy attendant for that…
What Amenities Does Emirates Offer?
On the flight between Japan and Dubai, I received a pouch with socks, a toothbrush, and an eye mask.

What Happens If You Miss Your Emirates Flight Connection?
If you simply miss your flight because of a time mix-up, it’s your own responsibility, but if a flight delay causes you to miss a connection, Emirates offers strong support.
It’s an airline based in Dubai. They own hotels, and if you miss your connection, they might let you use one of their hotels for free.

Although I haven’t experienced it myself, it seems that Emirates offers a service called ‘Dubai Connect,’ which provides free accommodation, meals, and more for long layovers in Dubai.
Emirates Is Also a Great Choice

Looking back on my experiences, I generally have a positive impression of Emirates.
When flying to Europe from Japan with Emirates, it’s usually a connecting flight, meaning the journey takes around 20 hours. However, I think Emirates offers a reassuring level of service.
